# Weekly API Evangelist Governance (Guidance)

*Let’s give a big Monday shout out to our*[*SDK partner APIMATIC*](https://bit.ly/3UFE1AP)*. API Evangelist storytelling occurs because of APIMATIC, and I am thankful to have their support for this ride!*

I am heads down helping customers think through their API governance, talking about [where API governance should occur](https://apievangelist.com/2025/05/07/where-should-api-governance-occur/), and learning to look at [API governance as something that is social](https://apievangelist.com/2025/05/07/api-governance-is-social/) rather than just technical.

*Where Should API Governance Occur?*

When it comes to API governance I am all about emulating the best approaches I find out there, and I have to say that [the Netherlands government has the most impressive approach to their API governance (guidance)](https://apievangelist.com/2025/05/05/api-governance-rules-from-the-netherlands/)—yes, the country.

*Netherlands API Governance Rules*

Why do you think it is that we perpetuate the narrative around a separation between business and engineering (IT)? As Claire Barrett is always good at reminding me—[we are all involved in the business](https://apievangelist.com/2025/05/06/we-should-get-some-business-stakeholders-involved-with-apis/), and there is no outside.

*Enforcing Authentication*

A pragmatic place to start with API governance within any enterprise is when it comes to the overlap between API governance and API security. I spent time this week [expanding on how API governance can be used to enforce authentication](https://apievangelist.com/2025/05/09/governaing-api-authentication/), with a platform specific example of [using AWS API Gateway OpenAPI extensions to guide the API governance rules you develop to automate governance](https://apievangelist.com/2025/05/09/developing-spectral-rules-for-aws-api-gateway-openapi-extensions/).

*Know Your API Consumer*

I worked to help a customer understand [the importance of knowing your API consumers](https://apievangelist.com/2025/05/05/know-your-api-consumers/), framed in a way that makes sense to wider API regulatory compliance narrative they are already plugged into—[Know Your Customer (KYC)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Know_your_customer). In the age of AI, you will have to know the consumers of your APIs.

*Spectral Poems*

One of the rights of passage that the discipline of computer science didn’t experience [that the wider realm of science experienced](https://www.bigbangpoetry.com/2012/11/quick-survey-of-the-history-of-science-poetry/), was a period where you could share your work as poetry—so I wanted to contribute my part with some [Spectral poems](https://apievangelist.com/2025/05/06/spectral-poems/).

```
tell-me-what-you-are-doing-for-me:
    description: If your little project is so cool you should tell me about it.
    message: I do not need a novel, but share the story of why your API matters so much.
    severity: error
    given: "$.info"
    then:
      field: description
      function: falsy
```

*If you need API Evangelist to help out with API governance*[*please let us know how we can help*](https://apievangelist.com/contact/)*. And thank you again to*[*APIMATIC*](https://bit.ly/3NyONos)*for their continued support. If you are interested in sponsoring our work and site please*[*review out sponsorship package*](https://partners.apievangelist.com/)*, and drop me an*[*email today*](mailto:info@apievangelist.com)*.*
