# **#BlinkTank: 4% fees, agentic storefronts, and January search volatility**

The New Year cobwebs are finally out. For most of the brands we speak to, the planning phase of 2026 is officially over and the focus has shifted entirely to execution. It is always an interesting time of year - ambition is high, but the reality of the roadmap is starting to bite.

This week, that reality includes a new line item in the marketing budget...

### **OpenAI’s "day one" Instant Checkout monetisation**

The industry is currently digesting the confirmation that OpenAI is charging a **4% transaction fee** for sales made via ChatGPT's "Instant Checkout".

Usually, the tech playbook is to capture market share first and worry about monetisation later. OpenAI is bucking that trend by going straight for the margin on day one. It’s a bold move, but it highlights the immense pressure the company is uder: OpenAI is reportedly burning through **$400 million a month**, with internal documents predicting a **$14 billion loss** for 2026. Simply put, they need revenue right now.

The reception among the brands we speak to has been pragmatic. If it works, **4% is a bargain.** When you compare it to the "all-in" costs of Google Ads, Meta, or Amazon's typical 15% referral fees, a 4% success fee for a genuine new acquisition channel is very reasonable.

However, it does raise some immediate strategic questions:

- **Cannibalisation** How much of this is "new" reach vs. customers who would have found you via organic search or direct anyway?
- **Agency oversight** This isn't a "set and forget" channel. It will require the same data hygiene, feed optimisation, and management as any other paid platform. As an agency that handles this work, we might be biased - but we've already seen how quickly unmonitored feeds can lead to wasted spend and disapproved items.

In terms of the overall picture, our suspicion remains that Google is better positioned. By waiving early fees on Gemini, they are following the traditional market-share model. They can afford to be patient because they already have the world's most successful ad engine funding the experiment. The fees will eventually come to Google, too - but they are letting the ecosystem mature first while OpenAI is forced to monetise immediately.

### **The "default listing" dashboard**

We’ve started seeing the backend of Shopify’s **Agentic Storefronts** feature appear. If you go to `/listings/default` from any Shopify admin URL, you can likely see a new dashboard. It’s currently live in about 60-70% of the stores we work with.

So, what is it? This is a centralised control panel for Shopify's new **Universal Commerce Protocol**. It essentially acts as a mapping layer between your store's internal data and the AI "agents" (like ChatGPT or Gemini) that are now browsing your site.

The dashboard allows you to select exactly which fields you want to use for product titles, descriptions, and attributes. For most, this is a five-minute job. For others, it’s going to expose fundamental flaws in how your product data has been structured for years. The high-impact move right now is cleaning up your source data; once more complex mapping fields become available, you want to be ready to plug in.

### **SERP volatility: The January churn**

After a relatively stable period, we are seeing significant ranking fluctuations across both the UK and USA. Tracking tools show spikes that suggest a recalibration of how Google is weighing traditional content against AI Overviews

### **From the blog: transparency and strategy**

We’ve published several new pieces this week that tackle the operational side of these shifts.

**The future of Shopify SEO** We’re often asked how the work that we do relates to the rise of AI search. This article is our attempt to explain that in detail. It isn't a theory on how "the industry" should work; it is a breakdown of **how we do it**. While AI is a fascinating extension of discovery, it really just validates and rewards the deep technical and structural work we’ve talked about for a long time.

**The cost of Shopify SEO** As you may have noticed, a lot of our recent content is about transparency. It’s hard to talk about transparency without covering pricing. This is our attempt to do that - an honest breakdown of what a mature engagement costs for £5m+ retailers.

**Our approach to international expansion** This is a topic that comes up quite a lot at this time of year as people move into the execution phase and look at new markets. New territories represent an amazing opportunity, but they also represent a very real risk if the technical foundation - specifically regional schema and localised feeds - isn't handled properly.

### **The "100%" extension**

We spotted a **100% off delivery** promotion extension on ads this week. While promotion extensions themselves aren't new, this specific format is a great high-visibility callout. After all any promotion is better than no promotion - it's an excellent "always-on" way to expand your ad real estate without discounting the product price.

### **A note on schema**

Finally, we’re noticing a trend of more Merchant Center feeds being flagged for mismatches between on-site schema and the product feed.

Google uses your schema as a truth-check; if your feed and your code don't align perfectly, Google triggers a **"Mismatched Value"** error. This validates our fundamental approach: **Shopify has to be the single point of truth.**
