# **#BlinkTank: Agentic Storefronts criteria, OpenAI moves to discovery, and GSC data spikes**

Hi everyone,

Yes, it is April 1st. But given the state of the market, I’ll spare you the "Shopify has been bought by Amazon" jokes.

Last week, I spoke at Quickfire's Engage with eCommerce event. The main thing that came up in every conversation was the reality of trading in a tough climate. Whether you are brand-side or an agency partner, the pressures are very real right now.

The last few years have been hard for everyone. Looking ahead, there is a clear sense of caution. [Market analysts](https://www.msn.com/en-za/news/other/global-recession-fears-mount-as-iran-war-shocks-energy-markets/ar-AA1ZHnkF) are increasingly pointing to energy price shocks and geopolitical instability as risks for a broader downturn. While the specifics are always debated, the brands I spoke to last week agreed on one thing - efficiency is no longer optional.

With that out of the way, onto this week's updates...

### Shopify Agentic Storefronts: One week in

It has been a week since Shopify pushed Agentic Storefronts live. As expected, it is not as if a magic tap has been turned on for sales. We are seeing a lot of enthusiasm, but it is very early days.

One point that wasn't entirely clear in the initial announcement is that eligibility is not yet universal. Currently, stores must either be based in the US or actively selling into the US to qualify. This has caused some confusion for UK brands wondering why the option hasn't appeared for them yet.

The table below lays out the eligibility criteria quite neatly.

### OpenAI shifts focus to visual product discovery

OpenAI has launched a redesigned shopping experience within ChatGPT, and it’s a significant pivot. After initially trying (and failing) to bake checkout directly into the chatbot, they are now doubling down on discovery - allowing users to browse products with rich imagery, side-by-side comparisons, and conversational refinement.

The experience is powered by their **Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)**, which pulls merchant product feeds directly into the LLM. While major US retailers like Target and Best Buy have already integrated, the big news for our audience is that Shopify merchants are automatically included via the Shopify Catalog.

### Gap to launch checkout within Google Gemini

Gap has announced it will launch a checkout experience directly within the Gemini app. This is a big first for a major fashion retailer, allowing users to move from a chat to a completed purchase without leaving the app.

The real story here is the **Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)**. This wasn't built by Google in a vacuum; it was co-developed with Shopify to create a standardised language for AI-driven transactions.

While UCP allows retailers to build the protocol into their own branded chatbots - giving them a degree of customisation and control - the underlying infrastructure is a joint endeavour. The two companies have made a pretty big bet on co-authoring the pipes that all future AI commerce will have to flow through, so it's interesting to see this starting to happen in the wild.

### Google Merchant Center loyalty program updates

Google is expanding its loyalty program features within Merchant Center. Starting March 25, 2026, you can integrate loyalty benefits directly into your product listings.

In tough conditions, retention is often one of the easier levers to pull. This update is a great example of how to do it - letting you surface member-only pricing, shipping benefits, or points right in the search results.

### Shopify launches Tinker, an AI merchant toolkit

Shopify has launched Tinker, a free mobile app that brings over 100 AI tools from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic into one place.

The app handles the heavy lifting of prompting. It lets merchants generate logos, product images, and 360-degree views using natural language. I haven't had much time to play with it properly yet, but it does look like quite a lot of fun.

### Unusual data spikes in Search Console

Brodie Clark has highlighted some strange data in Google Search Console this week. Impressions for Merchant Listings on desktop are skyrocketing for several large eCommerce sites.

In many cases, these match patterns we have seen too. It adds to a horrible environment for data and data storytelling - where automated tools and bots are increasingly distorting the picture of human intent. If you see a spike in desktop impressions without more traffic, check your Merchant Listings filter to see if the surge is isolated to that surface.

### Some thoughts for those in the consultancy space

I saw a quote from [Timo Dechau](https://www.linkedin.com/in/timo-dechau/) recently that stuck with me - *"How much of my value is tied to work that exists because building and maintaining things was hard?"*

![](https://media.licdn.com/dms/image/v2/D4E12AQHalKQoryYyxA/article-inline_image-shrink_1500_2232/B4EZ1C7wJRG0AU-/0/1774944454084?e=1776297600&v=beta&t=JpW1b_Loi0bcLKxqT_-MZmDTgx6v-Ao91XpKT_aCC1k)

This is something we have been thinking about a lot. It is clear that the direction things are going is something we couldn't have seen when we first pivoted toward our focus on large catalogue Shopify stores.

The gap between technical execution and strategy is closing. This is the way things are going to go: deep expertise, human decisions, and accelerated AI. Our value is no longer in "doing" the work AI can do; it is in the strategic orchestration of those tools to drive actual growth.

### Network shout-out: Addingwell

Tracking is a massive headache for Shopify stores right now and data quality is worse than ever. I have worked with the team at [**Addingwell**](https://addingwell.com/) for some time and I am very impressed with their approach to server-side analytics.

If you are struggling with data quality (and if you're on Shopify, I guarantee you probably are), it is well worth a look.

As ever, thanks for reading!

All the best, Sam
