ChatGPT checkout, human vs bot data, and Shop App becomes indexable
Welcome back to #BlinkTank - a weekly look at what’s happening across Shopify, search, and eCommerce for large-catalogue brands.
This week brings several updates that hint at where commerce is heading next: AI-driven checkout, better analytics visibility, and Shop App product listings appearing in SERPs.
ChatGPT Instant Checkout goes live
Shopify’s integration with ChatGPT is now live, with Glossier among the first brands using it. It’s a small but significant step towards what’s often called agentic commerce - where AI assistants help customers discover and buy products directly in conversation.
We’ve been talking about this shift for a while. It’s easy to overstate the timeline, but the direction is unmistakable. For DTC brands, this could eventually mean reclaiming visibility and margin that’s been lost to retail partners. For marketplaces, it could mean the opposite - discovery and purchase starting to happen somewhere entirely new.
No one knows how fast it will move, but it’s real now.
Human versus bot reporting
Shopify has introduced a new reporting dimension that distinguishes between human and bot sessions. It’s a (hopefully) useful improvement that helps merchants understand where traffic is coming from, and why conversion rates might appear to drop.
If you’ve noticed unexplained changes in your metrics, this is one of the first things to check.

Shop App listings now indexable
Shopify has confirmed that Shop App storefronts and product listings are now being indexed by Google and Bing.
It’s an interesting move with potential SEO implications. For some stores, it could extend visibility; for others, it might introduce a new layer of competition between their own site and Shop’s ecosystem.

Technical notes and dev insights
This is a bit less search-specific, but it's still very interesting for those involved in Shopify development.
Our senior dev Andy Russell posted this week about creating and passing objects in Liquid. This makes component-based development far more elegant by reducing the need to pass long lists of variables through snippets.
We also published a short reminder on when to tell us about theme changes. Much of our SEO work lives inside your theme structure - not just meta tags or headings, but reusable components linked directly to Macaroni and Macalytics.
Tools
If you haven’t seen it yet, Hoppn’s Infinite Colour Search is one of the most interesting ways to manage colour-related searches that we've seen on Shopify. It's not often you see something that feels genuinely innovative, but this is one of those instances.
Market and trend highlights
Shopify’s Global Holiday Retail Report suggests consumer spending is rebounding – shoppers plan to spend around $192 on average this season, and 64% say they’ll use AI tools as part of the shopping process (rising to 84% for Gen Z).
At the same time, McKinsey has forecast that AI agents could drive as much as $5 trillion in global sales by 2030. In our view, "could" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, but it's an interesting report all the same.
That’s it for this week’s #BlinkTank. See you next week!
All the best,
Sam
