#BlinkTank: Google brings AI checkout to search results
Unsurprisingly, the big news this week is UCP. I hope your coffee is strong - there is a lot to get through.
This newsletter is brought to you by shopexperts – the only Shopify experts directory where brands can find vetted talent for every single part of their business - design, dev, CRO, ads, email, SEO, and operations. More details later in this newsletter.
The buy button moves to Google
The headline news for retailers is the launch of the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).
While still in the pilot phase, this will allow customers to find a product and check out directly inside Google Search or the Gemini app.
Essentially, Google is turning the search results page into a place where you can actually buy things, rather than just seeing a list of websites and products. If a customer uses an AI prompt to find something specific, they can complete the purchase right there using their saved Google Wallet details.
We’ve seen plenty of dramatic commentary about this being the "end of the website." If we ignore the hyperbole, the reality is that the role of the storefront is changing. It is becoming less of a destination and more of a back-end.
In this model, Shopify effectively becomes a data warehouse for your products. Its job is to syndicate your brand's logic and inventory into whatever interface the customer happens to be using - whether that is a search bar, a chat app, or a voice assistant.

Google's Business Agent
One of the clearest signals of this shift is the new Business Agent. This is a virtual sales associate that lives inside Google Search, allowing shoppers to chat directly with your brand in your own voice.
We have talked a lot about the concept of making your brand portable. Shopify has been pushing this for a while with its Knowledge Base app - a central place to manage your brand's FAQs so they can be pushed into AI conversations.
If your brand is appearing in a chat or a feed, you need to make what is important about your business machine-readable. Your brand story and USPs need to be short, digestible, and ready to populate an AI interface at a moment's notice.

Gemini's eyecatching Apple partnership
The data suggests Google is gaining significant ground in the AI race, making these new commerce tools even more critical.
Google and Apple have officially entered into a multi-year deal where Gemini will form the backbone of Apple Intelligence and the next generation of Siri. This is a massive vote of confidence in Google’s infrastructure.
Latest data shows Google Gemini market share has surged to 18.2%, with referral traffic to external websites growing by 388% year-over-year. While ChatGPT remains the leader, its market share has dropped from 87% to 68% in just twelve months. This suggests users are moving away from standalone chatbots and towards AI tools that are already integrated into the phones and search engines they use every day.

The launch of ChatGPT Health
Meanwhile, OpenAI has just announced the launch of ChatGPT Health.
This is a dedicated, privacy-enhanced space within ChatGPT designed to help users manage their personal wellness. It allows you to securely connect medical records and sync data from apps like Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, and Peloton to get personalised advice on things like lab results, workout routines, and diet plans.
OpenAI is currently rolling this out via a waitlist. While it is a significant step into the wellness space, it highlights the same trend we are seeing in retail: AI is moving from being a general knowledge tool to a specific utility that relies on deeply personal, structured data.

The era of technical merchandising
So, what does all of this actually mean for your team?
Google is rolling out dozens of new AI-specific attributes in the Merchant Center. These go beyond simple keywords to include things like "is this compatible with X?" or "is this rug easy to clean?"
For a long time, SEO has sat in a bit of a no-man’s land. In most businesses, the person responsible for organic search is usually several desks away from the people who actually manage the product catalogue.
If SEO is increasingly about making a brand machine-readable and portable, it belongs in the merchandising department. It needs to sit with the people who are defining the schema and the product relationships at the source.
Our job was once to help people find the shelf. Now, Google is asking us to describe the products on it with enough detail that a machine can make the purchase decision on the user's behalf. We are moving into a period of technical merchandising.
The importance of knowledge mining
The strategic work for brands now is knowledge mining. It is about taking the nuance in your team's heads and getting it into your data.
Consider a search for a "modern, stylish rug for a high-traffic dining room."
- The old way: You optimise the website for the keyword "modern dining room rug."
- The new way: You provide structured data on material durability, traffic ratings, and stain resistance.
If your team knows that a specific material is "muddy-dog-proof," but that information is only in a salesperson's head, the AI can't recommend it. This extraction process - getting the "sales talk" into the metadata - is becoming a core part of what we do at Blink.
Shopexperts gets even better
For a long time, shopexperts has been an amazing resource to find dev support. Now, the platform is expanding the offering into agencies and freelancers for channels like CRO, ads, email, SEO, operations, and more. Whatever you need, there’s an expert for it.
Jonathan Kennedy is genuinely one of the nicest and hardest-working people in eCommerce, and knowing him, this new approach is going to be a massive success. You should definitely give him a follow on LinkedIn.
We have just set up our own listing there (full transparency, it's a work in progress). If you are looking for trusted partners, it is the best place to start.
