# **#BlinkTank: Shopify publishes AI playbook, the metafield purge, and GA4 adoption continues to fall**

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

There's some really interesting stuff this week, starting with Shopify's publication of a definitive playbook for AI product discovery that validates everything we’ve been shouting about for years regarding taxonomy and product data.

Alongside this, we have a major new tariff hitting US trade and some pretty telling data on the state of web analytics...

## **Shopify publishes AI playbook**

Shopify’s new guide to AI product discovery is a significant moment. It is a detailed, deeply practical resource that provides a formal framework for how brands should be thinking about the agentic web.

It is a significant moment because it provides a formal "Shopify playbook" for optimising for the agentic web. A big thanks to Kyle Risley and the Shopify team for putting this together - it’s essential reading for anyone trying to navigate where search is headed.

## **Shopify starts metafield diet**

If your Shopify store relies heavily on metafields, you need to be aware of a significant technical shift. Shopify is reducing the size allowance for metafield values from 2 megabytes down to just 16 kilobytes.

While this is ostensibly for performance reasons, there is a clear strategic move here. By making it impossible to data dump into a single field, Shopify is pushing merchants to re-architect their data into metaobjects.

Metaobjects require a defined schema (fields, types, values), which makes them significantly easier for LLMs and AI agents to ingest. If you want your products to surface in agentic search, your data can't be trapped in one giant, messy text blob; it needs to be structured so a machine can actually understand it.

## **GA4's popularity continues to plummet**

[Matt Bahr](https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthewbahr?miniProfileUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afs_miniProfile%3AACoAAAM4xrkB9_jhOhMFh28el7outG1nzfU_W44) ([Fairing](https://fairing.co/)) shared some fascinating data this week regarding GA4 adoption. In short, it is cratering. The chart of active accounts using GA integrations is trending down significantly, suggesting that eCommerce marketers are moving away from the platform in droves.

GA4 promised deeper insights through its event-based methodology, but the reality hasn't been anywhere near this pitch. The combination of increased technical complexity and leakier data due to GDPR and cookie consent has made the platform feel like more trouble than it's worth. Many brands have simply stopped paying attention to their web analytics entirely.

This is a subject that [we've written about extensively](https://blinkseo.co.uk/blogs/news/the-problem-with-tracking-and-why-it-is-hurting-shopify-stores) (although this article is in dire need of a refresh), but this lack of trust matters. gA4 is one of the few places to get any insight on organic revenue, and also to understand the sales mix across your channels. Without this, the danger is relying on in-platform reporting from Google Ads and Meta, and missing what is real revenue versus channel cannibalisation

## **Search Console’s launches AI-powered reporting**

Google has officially rolled out its AI-powered configuration within Search Console. This had been available to a limited amount of users since December, but is now available to everyone

While this might sound exciting in effect, all it allows you to do is use natural language to define a list of filters. It’s a nice layer of accessibility, but it doesn't actually bypass the real restrictions of Search Console. The fundamental issue still isn't how we configure the filters; it's the poor quality of the data we’re given to work with in the first place.

## **More chaos in the form of US tariffs**

Just when things were starting to seem a bit calmer, we get another hand grenade thrown in. The US administration has announced a 10% baseline tariff, effective February 24th.

I’ve given up trying to predict what’s going to happen next. This could change tomorrow, or it could be the new normal for the next year. For brands selling into the US, it’s a time for extreme caution and constant margin modelling.

## **A handy accessibility tool**

Last week we mentioned the surge in predatory lawsuits regarding ADA claims. We want to reiterate that accessibility is an incredibly important issue - people with disabilities do not get nearly as much consideration on the web as they should.

While we despise the "ambulance chasing" nature of these lawsuits, everyone should be working on their accessibility. A great (and free) place to start is the WAVE evaluation tool. It gives you a clear look at where your site might be failing users.

## **Network shout out: Say Yes**

This week, I want to give a shout-out to a long-term partner, [Phil Clark](https://www.linkedin.com/in/ACoAABxciDYBnHJqDXtVyQ157UjIXNBFGTmjkxU?miniProfileUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afs_miniProfile%3AACoAABxciDYBnHJqDXtVyQ157UjIXNBFGTmjkxU) and the team at [Say Yes.](https://sayyes.co/)

They specialise in something I think is often underserved (and misunderstood) in the Shopify world: headless builds. I have been deeply cautious about headless projects over the years- for a while, it felt like more people were writing articles about how cool headless was than were actually delivering functional stores.

Despite the risks, headless is a legitimate path for specific, complex projects - provided you have the right people on board. There are very few teams I would trust in this space, but Phil and Say Yes are among the rare exceptions.

Thanks so much for reading, and see you next week!
