How to add freebies without drowning in email sequences

Hey Reader,
I was on a call with a client yesterday who was setting up several lead magnet automations. She'd already created a full welcome sequence for her first freebie, five emails introducing herself and explaining her approach.
Now she was about to write five MORE emails for the new freebie. Basically the same content, just tweaked slightly.
"Wait," I said. "Before you do that, let me show you what I'm doing with my own freebies."
I use a bit of a different approach for my own freebies (which are currently getting a big rework, because why not - it's not like I'm busy ;) ). Instead of duplicating everything, I split it into two parts.
And it's so much simpler.
The mistake most people make with multiple freebies
When you have multiple lead magnets, it's tempting to create a complete welcome sequence for each one. It feels tidy, everything in its own little box.
But here's the problem: your welcome sequence shouldn't be just about the freebie. It's about YOU. Your approach, your philosophy, how you work, what makes you different.
That doesn't change based on which PDF someone downloaded.
Also, if someone downloads multiple things in a row, they would get several 'welcome emails' that are very similar. Not really a great first impression...
The smarter way I'm structuring my freebie automations
Instead of creating separate automations with full welcome sequences each time, split them into two parts:
Part 1: The Delivery Sequence (unique per freebie) This is the bit that's specific to what they downloaded. Usually one or two emails: the delivery email itself, and maybe a follow-up that gives tips on how to use it or answers common questions about that specific freebie.
Part 2: The Welcome Sequence (shared across all freebies) This is where you introduce yourself, share your philosophy, tell them what to expect, and give them a taste of how you work. It's the same for everyone because YOU'RE the same, regardless of which door they entered through.
So instead of five separate sequences with five emails each, you have:
Five to 10 delivery emails (one or two per freebie)
One welcome sequence (five emails, shared by everyone)
Much easier to manage. Much easier to update.
But what about people who download multiple freebies?
Good question! This is actually where this works in your favour, too. If you have several completely separate email sequences they would get the same or similar emails.. not what you want. But this way, they can't. And you can make that even more certain with some smart tagging.
Just before they go into the sequence, give them the tag '[Admin] In Welcome Sequence'. This first of all means you can remove them from the newsletter send, if you want to, but secondly, you can also have a condition that checks if they have that tag. If they do, or they have the '[Activity] Finished Welcome Sequence', then they just leave the automation after the delivery emails. No need to get the welcome sequence again.
This is the filter I have to make sure only people that are not in yet, get that welcome sequence
This is the part of the automation where we only send people that are actually new.
If this is making your brain hurt...
Listen, I've been doing email marketing for 15 years, and I still sometimes find things difficult. Email marketing can be amazing, but it can also be a lot.
If your automations are getting messy, or you're not quite sure how to structure this stuff, or you just want someone to look at what you've got and say "here's what you actually need", grab a free connection call. We can figure out together what would help most.
Sometimes you just need another set of eyes on it.
Warmest wishes
Natalie
P.S. If you're reading this thinking, "wait, I CAN do that?" Yes. Yes you can. And honestly, once you see how much simpler it makes everything, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. I know I did.
