# The 15 foundations that keep your marketing running

Hey Reader,

Since we're celebrating 15 years of Digitalie, let's stick with the theme of 15 (for now).

Over the years, I've seen the same things trip up small businesses again and again. So today, I want to share the **15 foundations that keep your marketing running.**

These aren't generic marketing tips you'll find in every blog post. These are the real foundations I've discovered through working with hundreds of entrepreneurs who needed their marketing to actually work, not just sound good on paper.

## **The 15 Marketing Foundations That Actually Matter**

1. **Your customers don't think in straight lines, so stop marketing to them like they do.** Forget the funnel. People circle through Know, Like, Trust, Buy, and Care in their own messy, human way. They might go round the circle a few times before moving deeper, and that's perfectly normal.
2. **You probably already have all the puzzle pieces for marketing success.** I see it every time - entrepreneurs convinced they need more tools, more tactics, more complexity. Truth is, you have what you need. We just need to arrange the pieces so they create the full picture.
3. **Implementation beats perfection every single time.** The most brilliant strategy sitting in a Google Doc helps nobody. A decent strategy that's actually running helps everyone.
4. **Your natural content strength is your marketing superpower.** Whether you're naturally Informative, Inspiring, Engaging, Behind the Scenes, About You, or Sales-focused - lean into that strength first, then build the others around it.
5. **Marketing tools should talk to each other, not work in isolation.** If your email platform doesn't know what your website visitors are doing, you're missing massive opportunities. Connected systems create seamless experiences.
6. **Strategy without systems is just wishful thinking.** You can have the most beautiful marketing plan in the world, but if you don't have the systems to execute it consistently, it's just pretty words.
7. **Make sure you can actually be found.** Your ideal customers need to know you exist before they can buy from you. Whether that's SEO, referrals, networking, or showing up consistently somewhere - you need a reliable way for people to discover you.
8. **Don't send people back out once they're in your circle.** Every piece of marketing should guide people deeper into relationship with you, not scatter them to the four winds.
9. **Your story is your strategy's secret weapon.** People connect with people, not businesses. Your story - your why, your journey, your perspective - is what makes everything else work.
10. **Pick platforms that work for YOU, not what everyone else is doing.**If you hate making videos, TikTok isn't your platform. If your customers aren't on LinkedIn, why are you posting there five times a week? Choose based on your strengths and where your people actually are.
11. **Don't pick tools that try to do everything.** They don't manage to do any of them great. Better to have three focused tools that talk to each other than one "all-in-one" that does everything poorly.
12. **Build a content library you can actually use.** Have blogs, videos, resources, social media content, anything you like making that you can draw from and repurpose. Stop inventing the wheel every single time you need to create something.
13. **Automation should feel human, not robotic.** Just because it's automated doesn't mean it should feel cold. The best automated systems anticipate needs and solve problems like a thoughtful friend would.
14. **Start with understanding, not selling.** Before you talk about what you do, show you understand what they're dealing with. Speak their language, acknowledge their world, then show how you can help make it better.
15. **Every touchpoint is a chance to build trust.** From your opt-in form to your checkout process to your follow-up emails - each interaction either builds trust or erodes it. Make them all count.

These foundations have guided every strategy I've built, every system I've implemented, and every puzzle I've helped solve over the past 15 years. They're not flashy, but they work.

You don't need all 15 to be perfect. I am still working on improving some. But the stronger these foundations are, the easier it is to build momentum without burning out.

**Which ones do you feel confident about and which ones need your attention?**

We're only on Day 2, and I've got plenty more coming your way. Tomorrow I'll be sharing a fun throwback to where it all started. 😉
