Hey Reader,
Even the softest brownie — the gooey, melt-in-your-mouth kind — has an edge.
That edge gives it shape. Structure. A little bite. Without it, it’s just a puddle of batter. (Though there is this really cool video where this guy tries to create a brownie with no edges... guess where this subject line idea came from ;) )
It’s the same with us.
You can be kind, caring, thoughtful… and still have boundaries. You need them. Especially in business.
Because those edges? They don’t make you less approachable. They make you clear. And clarity is kind. For your clients and for you!
So what could those boundaries look like?
Here are a few of mine:
- I don’t do calls on Fridays.
- I try not to work on weekends.
- I write like me, not the corporate suit version of me.
- My packages are shaped around what works best for my clients and for me.
- If I sense red flags, I’m out. I’ve had impossible clients before, and life (and business) are too short for that.
- I believe you shouldn't have to mask, squeeze yourself into someone else's system, or pretend you're fine when you're not. My work leaves space for how you actually are.
- I’m flexible within reason. If you need a little extra time, a different way of communicating, or a slower pace, I can work with that. I just don’t bend myself out of shape anymore.
These aren’t rigid rules or power moves. They’re how I feel like I can be me, so I can show up well and help you. They’re how I invite the right people in.
Your version might look different.
You might have different rules that are important to you.
- Maybe you only check email twice a day.
- Maybe you charge a premium because your energy has limits.
- Maybe you don’t do last-minute work or you only do VIP days.
- Maybe you only want to hire contractors that feel like a safe space.
Whatever your “brownie edge” is, I want to say: Use that edge. Especially if it comes from who you are, how you move through the world, or what you need to feel safe, seen, and respected.
You don’t have to be harder. Or louder. Or more polished. You don’t need to be for everyone. You just need to be unmistakably you — soft centre, hard edges and all.
Because that version? That’s the one people trust.
And in the end, that is what I want my marketing and that of my clients to be based on.
