GLP BRIEF
This week: Why the scale can stay quiet even when other things are changing, what researchers are learning about exercise motivation, why sports regulators are watching these medications, and how a smaller appetite can change your grocery bill.
THE 10-SECOND TAKEAWAY
The scale tells you what you weigh. It doesn't tell you how your Tuesday went. Weight is one number—not the entire scoreboard.
THE BIG QUESTION
Why Won't the Scale Move — Even Though I Feel Better?
You step on the scale.
Same number.
Again.
It’s easy to assume nothing is happening. But then you notice something strange: your afternoon energy is back, the stairs don't feel as steep, and your appetite is completely different. Even your grocery cart looks like someone else filled it.
So which story is true?
The scale says one thing. The rest of your life says another.
Here is what people miss: the scale only measures weight. It doesn't measure better sleep, steadier energy, or how easy it feels to move through your day. And it definitely can't measure that moment you open the fridge, stare inside, and realize you aren't actually hungry.
One number can never tell the whole story.
REMEMBER THIS
Don't confuse one measurement with the whole picture. Progress doesn't always look like progress on a scale.
THE GLP BRIEF NON-SCALE SCORECARD
So What Should You Watch Instead?
Not everything needs to become another number. Once a week, ask seven simple questions:
- APPETITE — Better / Same / Different
- ENERGY — Better / Same / Worse
- SLEEP — Better / Same / Worse
- MOVEMENT — Easier / Same / Harder
- FOOD HABITS — Changed / Same
- HEALTH NUMBERS — Changed / Same / Don't Know
- EVERYDAY LIFE — What's one thing that feels different?
Don't give yourself a grade. You're not trying to prove that you're making progress. You're trying to notice what changed.
But Here's the Catch
A quiet scale doesn't automatically mean your medication isn't working.
But it also doesn't automatically mean it is working.
Other changes can be useful information—but they're not a substitute for checking in on your health and treatment plan with your healthcare professional.
One Question for Your Next Appointment
"My weight hasn't changed much, but I've noticed these other changes. Based on how long I've been on this medication, my current dose, and health goals, is my plan still appropriate?"
GLP BRIEF GUIDE
Small Appetite Survival Guide
When your appetite changes, the question isn’t always: "What’s the healthiest meal I can make?"
Sometimes it’s: "What can I actually manage right now?"
The Small Appetite Survival Guide ($9) is built around that problem. Simple foods. Smaller meals. Easy combinations. Practical ideas for days when a normal meal suddenly feels like way too much.
RESEARCH WATCH
Can GLP-1s Change What Feels Rewarding?
Here’s a question researchers are starting to explore: What happens when a medication changes not just how hungry you feel, but how rewarding certain things feel?
Researchers are looking at brain systems involved in appetite, reward, habits, and motivation. That matters because some people taking GLP-1 medications describe changes beyond food. Old cravings may feel less interesting. Certain habits may lose some of their pull.
And that raises another question: Could those changes affect motivation to exercise?
Maybe. But we don’t have a simple answer yet.
THE STUDY IN PLAIN ENGLISH
- WHAT WE KNOW: GLP-1 medications affect brain pathways involved in appetite and food-related behavior.
- WHAT RESEARCHERS ARE ASKING: Whether those effects also change how people respond to other rewards or habits, including exercise.
- THE CATCH: It’s too early to say that GLP-1s simply make people more motivated — or less motivated — to exercise. People respond differently, and researchers are still working out which changes are related to appetite, reward, habits, mood, environment, or something else.
So for now, this is a watch-this-space story, not a conclusion. And that’s often where the most interesting research starts.
FROM THE COMMUNITY
“My Grocery Bill Changed Too.”
We talk a lot about what GLP-1s cost. But one reader noticed something going in the other direction: their grocery bill got smaller.
Not because they were following some special diet. They were simply buying less:
- Fewer impulse purchases.
- Fewer snacks and drinks.
- Less takeout.
- Less food sitting in the refrigerator because they bought it with good intentions and never got around to eating it.
A smaller appetite can change the way you shop. And sometimes the change doesn’t show up on the scale—sometimes it shows up on the grocery receipt.
Of course, food prices, eating habits, medication costs, and insurance coverage vary widely. A smaller grocery bill isn’t guaranteed to make up for the cost of treatment.
But it’s a useful reminder: Not every change has the same scoreboard.
WAIT, WHAT?
Why Are GLP-1s Being Watched in Competitive Sports?
This one sounds more dramatic than it is.
The World Anti-Doping Agency, or WADA, monitors certain substances and methods that are not currently prohibited but may be worth tracking. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are being monitored rather than listed as prohibited substances.
WADA uses its Monitoring Program to gather information about substances that may have potential for misuse, health concerns, or effects that could matter in different sports.
It’s essentially a way of saying "We’re watching this"—not "This is prohibited." That distinction matters.
5-MINUTE WIN
Make Your Meal Smaller Before You Make It Complicated
Tonight, try serving yourself a smaller portion than you normally would. You can always have more. You don’t have to finish everything just because it’s on the plate. And if you have leftovers, save them.
The goal is less waste and less pressure.
- Yield: 2 small servings
- Prep + Cook Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 cup shredded rotisserie chicken
- ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 tsp olive oil
- ½ lemon (juiced)
- 1 tbsp grated Parmesan
- ¼ tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: Diced cucumber, spinach, or parsley
Instructions
- Warm the rice and shredded chicken together.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the Greek yogurt, lemon juice, Parmesan, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Stir in the olive oil until smooth.
- Spoon the sauce over the chicken and rice.
- Add vegetables or herbs if desired.
- Start with a portion that feels comfortable. You can always have more later.
THE GLP BRIEF MOVE: Don't make yourself finish it just because it's on the plate. Eat what feels comfortable, save the rest, and come back to it later.
Easy Swaps
- No chicken? Swap with eggs, tuna, or tofu.
- No rice? Swap with potatoes, quinoa, or toast.
- No Greek yogurt? Swap with blended cottage cheese.

GLP BRIEF CHEAT SHEET
- NUMBER TO REMEMBER: Weight is one measurement—not the whole picture.
- MISTAKE TO AVOID: Assuming a quiet scale tells you nothing is changing.
- THE CATCH: Other changes don't automatically prove treatment is working, either.
- SURPRISING IDEA: GLP-1s are being studied for effects beyond appetite, including reward and motivation.
- ONE THING TO TRY: Fill out the Non-Scale Scorecard once this week.
THE BOTTOM LINE
You step on the scale.
Same number.
For a moment, it can feel like that number tells you everything.
It doesn’t.
Maybe nothing else has changed. Maybe a lot has: your sleep, your appetite, your energy, the way you move, the way you shop, or the way food fits into your day.
Those things don’t always show up on the scale. And noticing them doesn’t mean you have to convince yourself that everything is going perfectly, either.
It simply gives you more information.
The scale is one number. Don’t let it become the entire story.
Be well,
