- Thin Desires Are Eating Your Life — This hit different. The distinction between desires that transform you versus ones that leave you unchanged is something I’ve felt but never articulated. What really got me is how tech companies figured out how to give us the dopamine hit without any of the actual growth—like getting the reward of connection without having to show up for anyone. The paradox is wild: we’ve never had more access to satisfaction, yet we’re more anxious and lonely than ever. Honestly? The part about thick desires being unscalable is what makes them worth pursuing. His solution isn’t some grand manifesto—just do small, deliberate things that can’t be optimized: bake bread, write a letter by hand, help one specific person. That’s the quiet resistance.
- Go ahead, self-host Postgres — The thing that stuck with me here is how cloud providers convinced us that database management is this mysterious black art requiring enterprise support. But here’s Pierce running production Postgres for thousands of users, spending maybe 10 minutes a week on maintenance. The economics are ridiculous—RDS costs $328/month for what you can get on a dedicated server for way less, and you’re literally just running standard Postgres with some monitoring bolted on. What I appreciate most is the honesty about operational reality: 30 minutes of stress during a manual migration over two years. That’s it. The complexity myth is profitable, but it’s still a myth. For most of us, self-hosting isn’t just viable—it’s the more transparent, cost-effective choice.
- This is not the future — Needed this reminder. We’ve been conditioned to treat every tech company’s roadmap as destiny—NFTs, the Metaverse, AI everything, internet-connected beds. But here’s the thing: most of that stuff failed or faced massive rejection. What resonates is how the author grounds this in actual harm: people trained to accept dark patterns, older folks resigned to digital confusion, systematic exploitation packaged as progress. The best part? Reframing every technology choice as both a political statement and a tradeoff. It shifts you from passive consumer to active participant. Not everything new is inevitable, and not everything inevitable is good. We get to choose what we build our lives around, and that choice matters more than any company’s marketing budget.
- Disks Lie: Building a WAL that actually survives — Okay, this one rewired how I think about durability. The premise is unsettling: your disk is actively lying to you. Sectors fail without error flags, the kernel tells you data is written when it’s still sitting in a buffer, hardware bit flips happen silently. That naive
write()call you trust? Not durable at all. What I appreciate is the five-layer defense strategy—checksums, dual WAL files, O_DIRECT + O_DSYNC to bypass caching, io_uring operation linking for ordering, and post-fsync verification reads. It’s not paranoia when these 1-in-a-million failures happen regularly at scale. Production systems like PostgreSQL and SQLite build all these defenses because they learned the hard way. The takeaway? Treat your storage as potentially hostile, or discover your durability guarantees were lies during the worst possible moment—recovery after a crash. - Lightweight Cardinality Estimation with Density — I love when simple ideas solve real problems elegantly. Density (just 1/distinct-values) lets query planners estimate how selective a filter will be without expensive histograms or sampling. The insight that makes this work? If your data is roughly uniform, density tells you how many rows an equality predicate will match. Even better, when you combine columns and the density exceeds what you’d expect from multiplying individual densities, you’ve detected correlation. What makes this practical is that you can track it incrementally with HyperLogLog across many column combinations—something that would be prohibitively expensive with full statistics. It’s the kind of tool that gives you 80% of the value for 20% of the complexity, which is exactly what database designers intuitively know about their data but systems need to compute.
- Zed Is Our Office — What strikes me about Zed isn’t just that they built collaboration into the editor from the ground up—it’s that they’re living it themselves. The whole company runs inside Zed: all-hands meetings, project work, retrospectives, everything. That’s the kind of conviction that matters. The technical foundation is solid—CRDTs ensure everyone’s edits converge to the same state without manual conflict resolution, which is exactly how this should work but rarely does. The practical simplicity is what sells it though: just GitHub auth, no extensions to install, no session links to share, built-in audio and screensharing. They learned from pair programming at Pivotal Labs and built what remote teams actually need. Honestly? If an editor company can run their entire operation through their own collaboration tools and it stays snappy whether you’re across the room or across continents, they might be onto something real.
- Leaving Meta and PyTorch — There’s something deeply human about this announcement. Soumith spent nearly eight years leading PyTorch to 90%+ adoption in AI—it’s literally the foundation of the modern AI industry, taught everywhere from MIT to rural India. And he’s walking away not because something’s broken, but because he needs to know what else is out there. What gets me is the emotional weight: “one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.” That’s real. The confidence he shows in the team—Edward, Suo, Alban, Greg, John, Joe, Jana—solving complex problems without leaning on him anymore signals genuine organizational maturity. He’s not claiming victory, just acknowledging “this wasn’t my journey, it was ours.” The best part? He’s choosing small, new, and uncomfortable over leveraged influence. That takes guts. It’s a reminder that transformational leaders sometimes serve their creation best by stepping away.
- The Talent Machine — The reframe here is powerful: hiring isn’t filtering, it’s selling. You’re not passively weeding out candidates—you’re actively selling your position to talented people. What I appreciate most is how practical this gets. Fixed salary structures and public handbooks aren’t just nice-to-haves, they’re competitive advantages that signal fairness and reduce negotiation friction. The market segmentation insight is smart too: don’t compete for the broadest pool, find underserved pockets. Choose niche tech stacks like Elixir or Clojure and you attract more passionate engineers with less competition. The “trimodal” salary reality is something more companies need to understand—you don’t need to chase top 1% Big Tech talent when there are exceptional engineers undervalued at Tier 1 and 2 companies. Honestly? Treating recruitment as product positioning—defining your unique value prop and targeting the right segment—makes so much more sense than maximizing applicant volume and hoping something sticks.
