Is Therapy Worth It? What Really Happens in Your First Therapy Session There comes a moment for many of us when we quietly wonder, “Maybe I should talk to someone.” It might happen after another sleepless night spent replaying every conversation in your head. It might happen when your patience feels thinner than it used to, or when the weight you’ve been carrying suddenly feels heavier than you can manage on your own. Sometimes that thought lingers for months (or even years) before you ever act on it. If you’ve found yourself wondering whether therapy is worth it, you’re in good company. As a therapist, I can tell you that one of the most common things I hear isn’t someone’s deepest fear or biggest struggle. It’s a much simpler question. “I’ve never done therapy before…what actually happens?” It’s a fair question. Therapy can feel mysterious if you’ve never experienced it. Television has convinced us that you’ll lie on a couch while someone silently takes notes and analyzes your childhood. Social media sometimes makes it look like one conversation will magically change your life. The truth is much less dramatic...and much more human. Your first therapy session is simply a conversation. Not a test. Not an interrogation. Not a place where you’re expected to have everything figured out before you walk through the door. It’s simply a space where you get to arrive exactly as you are. Most people come into that first appointment carrying a mixture of emotions. They’re hopeful but nervous. Relieved they finally made the appointment, yet wondering if they should cancel before anyone notices. They worry they’ll say the wrong thing, cry too much, or not know what to say at all. Here’s something I wish everyone knew before their first session: You don’t have to impress your therapist. You don’t have to tell your entire life story in fifty minutes. You don’t have to have the “right” reason to be there. You simply have to show up. The first session is about getting to know one another. We’ll talk about what’s been weighing on you lately, what’s brought you to therapy, and what you hope might feel different in your life. I’ll ask questions, not because I’m looking for perfect answers, but because I’m trying to understand your story. Together, we’ll begin to connect the dots between where you’ve been and where you’d like to go. Some people come in with pages of notes they’ve written ahead of time because they’re afraid they’ll forget something important. Others sit quietly for a few moments before finding the words. Some cry before they’ve even finished introducing themselves, while others laugh nervously through the whole session. Every single one of those experiences is normal. One thing people apologize for more than anything else in therapy is crying. “I promised myself I wasn’t going to cry.” “I’m sorry.” Can I tell you a secret? You never have to apologize for having emotions in a therapist’s office. Tears don’t tell me you’re weak. They often tell me you’ve been carrying something alone for far too long. Sometimes they’re tears of grief. Sometimes they’re relief. Sometimes they’re simply what happens when your nervous system realizes, perhaps for the first time in a long time, that it doesn’t have to stay on high alert. Therapy isn’t about fixing what’s broken because I don’t believe people are broken. I believe people adapt. We learn ways to survive difficult experiences. We develop habits that once protected us but may no longer serve us. We become experts at holding everything together while quietly falling apart inside. Therapy helps us understand those patterns with compassion instead of shame. It gives us the opportunity to choose new ways of responding instead of simply reacting. People often ask me if therapy is really worth the investment. That’s a question only you can answer, but I’ve had the privilege of watching hundreds of people walk through my office doors believing they were beyond help. They came in thinking they needed to become someone completely different. Instead, they discovered that healing wasn’t about becoming a new person at all. It was about becoming more fully themselves. I’ve watched parents learn to respond instead of react. I’ve watched people who’ve spent decades believing they were “too much” finally realize they were carrying burdens no one should have to carry alone. I’ve watched individuals living with anxiety discover what it feels like for their minds to become quiet enough to enjoy an ordinary Tuesday afternoon. Healing doesn’t happen overnight. There isn’t a magic sentence your therapist says that suddenly erases anxiety, trauma, grief, or depression. Real healing happens slowly, often so gradually that you don’t notice it at first. Then one day, you find yourself handling a difficult conversation differently. You realize you slept through the night. You notice you’re laughing more. You recognize that something which once completely overwhelmed you now feels manageable. Those are the moments that remind you why you started. I often say that healing begins by taking your shoes off. Not literally, although you’re certainly welcome to get comfortable, but metaphorically. It’s about setting down the expectations, the masks, the pressure to have it all together, and allowing yourself to simply be human. If you’ve been thinking about therapy, consider this your permission to stop wondering whether your problems are “big enough.” You don’t have to wait until you’re completely overwhelmed before asking for support. You don’t have to earn help by reaching a breaking point. Sometimes the bravest thing you’ll ever do isn’t having all the answers. It’s admitting you don’t have to find them alone.
