A name is not just what people call you. It is a repeated symbol attached to your identity. It appears on contracts, emails, social media, work documents, old photographs, childhood notebooks, certificates, search results, gossip threads, and people's memories of you. Every time someone says your name, they are essentially pointing in your direction. In sympathetic magic, that makes a name remarkably useful because it functions almost like an energetic address. This is also why old folklore is full of secret names, hidden names, baptismal names, magical names, and stories where knowing the *true* name of something gives you power over it. Rumpelstiltskin is probably the most obvious pop-cultural example: discovering the name breaks the power dynamic entirely. The story is exaggerated, obviously, but the magical idea underneath it is ancient—**to name something is to establish a connection to it.** Which means your name is worth protecting. And no, I do not mean assuming everyone who dislikes you is sitting under a full moon dramatically chanting your legal name over a black candle. Most harmful attention is far less cinematic. People envy. People obsess. People gossip. People project. People repeatedly think about someone with anger, resentment, jealousy, or fixation. Whether you interpret that spiritually or psychologically, I prefer not to leave the front door unlocked simply because most people probably will not walk through it. One of my favorite ways to ward a name is surprisingly simple. Write your full name on a small piece of paper. If you use multiple names publicly, you can include those too. Draw a protective boundary around the name, but make that boundary meaningful. A circle can represent containment. A square can represent stability. Crossed lines can represent refusal. Thorns can symbolize “you may approach, but you may not touch.” Mirrors can represent harmful intention being reflected away. You are essentially creating a tiny magical perimeter around the identity represented on the paper. Then add a statement around the outer edge: **“My name may be spoken, but I remain sovereign. Nothing harmful may reach me through it.”** Fold the paper inward several times so the ward closes around the name. You can place it beneath a protective candle holder, inside a small box, behind a photograph, underneath your computer, or somewhere connected to your public life. If your name is mostly encountered online, keeping the ward near your laptop or workspace gives it a lovely technomancy flavor. Your physical ward becomes the magical firewall sitting behind your digital identity. But there is another version I find even more interesting. Create a **decoy layer** around your name. Write your name in the center, then draw another version of it around the outside—perhaps distorted, mirrored, written in symbols, or incorporated into a sigil. Imagine the outer version functioning like camouflage. Attention lands on the symbol rather than penetrating further. Your public identity remains visible, but the deeper energetic version of you sits behind several layers of magical glass. Think of it like having a mailing address versus giving someone the keys to your bedroom. They may know where you exist. That does not mean they are entitled to access you. This can be particularly useful for writers, creators, readers, spiritual practitioners, managers, public-facing professionals, or anyone whose name circulates among people they do not personally know. The more visible you become, the more people develop opinions about you. Some will love you. Some will dislike you. Some will invent an entirely fictional version of you in their heads and then get angry at that imaginary person. Wonderful. They can argue with the decoy. Another practice is to keep a private magical name that you rarely—or never—share. Your everyday name handles mundane interaction while the private name represents the self you use in ritual, spirit work, or deep magical practice. Historically, variations of this idea appear repeatedly in occult traditions because secrecy itself can operate as protection. What cannot easily be identified cannot easily be targeted. The point is not paranoia. The point is sovereignty. Protection magic is ultimately about deciding where you end and everyone else begins. Your home has doors. Your phone has a password. Your bank account has authentication. Your body has skin. Your identity deserves a boundary too. So perhaps before buying another protective crystal, sprinkling salt around the house, or constructing an elaborate ward that looks like the magical equivalent of airport security, start with something much closer to you.
