When Did Being Exhausted Become a Status Symbol?

Busy Doesn’t Mean Productive Somewhere along the way, we decided that being busy was a personality trait. “How are you?” - Busy. “How’s work?” - Busy. “How’s life?” - So busy. And somehow, we say it almost like we’re reporting a vital sign. We’ve created a culture where a packed calendar can look like success, exhaustion can look like ambition, and having absolutely no room to breathe can feel strangely validating. Because if we’re busy, we must be doing something important… right? Except busy doesn’t always mean productive. Sometimes busy just means overwhelmed. Sometimes it means distracted. Sometimes it means we’ve said yes to too many things. Sometimes it means we’re avoiding something uncomfortable by staying in constant motion. And sometimes, if we’re being really truthful, we stay busy because slowing down makes us feel guilty. When Did Rest Become Something We Have to Earn? I see this mindset all the time. “I’ll relax when I get everything done.” Except everything is never done. There will always be another email. Another load of laundry. Another appointment to schedule. Another project. Another notification. Another person who needs something. Another drawer you suddenly decide needs organizing at 9:47 p.m. because apparently tonight is the night we become the kind of person who has perfectly organized junk drawers. The finish line keeps moving. So we tell ourselves we’ll rest later while our bodies continue running on stress hormones, caffeine, and sheer determination. And eventually, something starts giving. Maybe you become more irritable. Maybe your patience gets shorter. Maybe you can’t fall asleep because your brain suddenly remembers every task you’ve forgotten since 2014. Maybe you feel anxious when you’re doing nothing. Maybe you’re exhausted but somehow still can’t stop. Or maybe you eventually reach a point where you don’t want to do anything at all. That’s the part we often miss when we glorify being busy. Constant busyness can take a real toll on our mental health. When “Productive” Starts Looking Like Anxiety Anxiety loves busyness because busyness gives us the illusion that we’re controlling everything. If I stay ahead of everything, nothing will fall apart. If I answer immediately, nobody will be disappointed. If I plan everything perfectly, nothing unexpected will happen. If I keep moving, maybe I won’t have time to think about what’s bothering me. The problem is that our nervous system doesn’t necessarily distinguish between being chased by an actual threat and living every day like everything is urgent. When everything becomes important, nothing gets to feel peaceful. You may start waking up already thinking about your to-do list. You struggle to be present because your brain is constantly moving three steps ahead. You finish one thing and immediately think about the next. You feel guilty during downtime. And even when you technically have nothing to do, your body doesn’t really know how to stop. That isn’t productivity. That’s living in a state of constant activation. And Sometimes Busyness Eventually Turns Into Burnout Here’s where things can get confusing. We usually picture burnout as someone who simply worked too hard. But burnout can look like losing motivation altogether. Things you used to care about feel exhausting. Small tasks suddenly feel enormous. You’re constantly tired. You stop enjoying things. You withdraw. You procrastinate more. And then, because you’re getting less done, you start criticizing yourself for not being productive enough. So you push harder. Which makes you more exhausted. Which makes you less productive. Which makes you criticize yourself even more. It becomes a pretty miserable little cycle. Chronic stress and burnout can also overlap with symptoms of depression: low energy, difficulty concentrating, sleep changes, irritability, feeling disconnected, and losing interest in things you normally enjoy. And sometimes what looks like “I just need to get myself together” is actually your mind and body saying: I cannot keep functioning at this pace. Then There’s the Comparison Game Of course, our own expectations aren’t the only thing feeding this. We also have front-row seats to everyone else’s productivity. Before social media, you probably didn’t know that someone you went to high school with woke up at 4:30 a.m., worked out, meal-prepped seven lunches, ran a business, cleaned their entire house, drank 64 ounces of water, practiced gratitude, and baked organic sourdough before you hit snooze for the second time. Now you do. And before your feet even hit the floor, you can already feel behind. We compare our normal Tuesday to someone else’s highlight reel. We see the finished project but not the help they had. We see the clean kitchen but not the mess just outside the camera frame. We see the business milestone but not the years it took to get there. We see someone doing more and quietly decide that means we’re doing less. So we start trying to prove something. Sometimes to other people. Sometimes to ourselves. We fill our calendars. We post the accomplishments. We talk about how busy we are. We feel strangely uncomfortable admitting we had a quiet weekend. Because somewhere along the way, busy became evidence that our lives matter. But your worth has never been determined by how exhausted you are. Productivity Should Actually Produce Something And I don’t just mean work. Sometimes a productive choice is finishing a report. Sometimes it’s answering the email you’ve avoided for three days. Sometimes it’s exercising. But sometimes productivity looks like sleeping. Sometimes it looks like leaving a blank space on your calendar. Sometimes it looks like sitting at your kid’s game without answering emails. Sometimes it looks like saying no to something you technically could fit into your schedule. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is stop. Because the goal isn’t to squeeze the maximum amount of output from yourself every single day. The goal is to build a life you can actually live in. A Few Ways to Step Out of the Busy Cycle Ask yourself what actually matters today. Not what could be done. Not what everyone else is doing. What actually matters? Choose a few priorities instead of treating everything like a priority. Because when everything is urgent, your nervous system never gets the message that anything is safe to set down. Notice when busyness is actually avoidance. This one can sting a little. Sometimes we clean the entire kitchen instead of making the phone call. We reorganize our planner instead of starting the project. We volunteer for three new things instead of dealing with the thing that’s making us uncomfortable. Ask yourself: Am I being productive, or am I staying busy so I don’t have to sit with something? No judgment. Just curiosity. Stop treating rest like a reward. You don’t need to complete enough tasks to deserve rest. Rest is part of functioning. Athletes don’t become stronger by training every waking hour. Muscles recover during rest. Your brain isn’t that different. Downtime helps with emotional regulation, memory, creativity, problem-solving, and focus. Rest isn’t the opposite of productivity. Sometimes rest is what makes productivity possible. Create some white space. You don’t have to schedule every available hour. Leave gaps. Give yourself transition time. Sit in the car for five minutes before walking into the next thing. Drink your coffee without multitasking. Take the long way home. Look out the window. Do something wildly rebellious like standing in line without immediately pulling out your phone. Your brain needs moments when nobody is asking anything from it. Including you. Check your comparison habits. If certain accounts consistently make you feel behind, inadequate, lazy, unsuccessful, or like you should somehow be doing twelve more things with your life…Mute them. You’re allowed. Your mental health is more important than keeping up with someone’s 5 a.m. productivity routine. And remember: you have no idea what someone else’s life actually looks like outside the frame. Ask Yourself This At the end of the day, instead of asking: “Did I do enough today?” Try asking: “Did I spend my energy on what actually mattered today?” Those are very different questions. Because you can spend twelve hours being busy and accomplish almost nothing meaningful. And you can have a slower day where you complete one important task, have a real conversation with someone you love, rest your body, and feel more like yourself. I’d call that pretty productive. Your Challenge This Week Pick one thing you are doing primarily because you feel like you should. Maybe it’s a commitment. Maybe it’s an unrealistic expectation. Maybe it’s something you keep doing because everyone else seems to. Ask yourself: Does this actually need my energy right now? And if the answer is no, experiment with setting it down. Then notice what happens. You might feel relieved. You might feel guilty. You might feel anxious. That doesn’t necessarily mean you made the wrong choice. Sometimes it just means you’re learning that your value isn’t measured by how much you can carry. You are allowed to have open space in your life. You are allowed to rest before everything is finished. You are allowed to be unavailable sometimes. You are allowed to have a day that doesn’t photograph well, impress anyone, or produce something measurable. And you are allowed to stop wearing exhaustion like proof that you’re doing life correctly. Busy doesn’t always mean productive. Sometimes busy just means busy. And maybe we don’t need to be quite so impressed by it.
