You probably don’t need more advice

You Probably Don’t Need More Advice. You Might Need Better Questions. There is no shortage of advice. Open Instagram and someone is telling you how to fix your morning routine. Scroll TikTok and you’ll find someone explaining the five habits that will supposedly change your life. Walk through a bookstore and there are entire shelves dedicated to becoming more productive, more confident, more disciplined, more healed, more organized, more everything. And yet, most of us don’t actually have an information problem. We usually know more than we give ourselves credit for. We know we should set boundaries. We know we need rest. We know that constantly saying yes when we want to say no eventually turns into resentment. We know that avoiding the conversation doesn’t make the problem disappear. We know that scrolling until midnight probably isn’t helping us feel better. The harder part is figuring out why we keep doing the things we already know aren’t working. That’s where good reflection becomes different from good advice. Sometimes you don’t need someone to hand you another checklist. You need someone, or something, to help you slow down long enough to notice your own patterns. Why does this particular situation keep getting under your skin? Why do you keep abandoning the boundary you promised yourself you would hold? Why does one decision feel almost impossible when another person could make it without thinking twice? What are you afraid will happen if you stop being the dependable one for everyone? What would you choose if guilt weren’t making the decision for you? Those are different questions. And sometimes those questions are where change actually starts. This week’s newsletter is sponsored by Purpose. Here is one of the reasons I was interested in working with them (because if I wouldn't use it, I'm not sharing it with my readers). Purpose is an AI-powered personal growth app designed to learn about your values, patterns, goals, challenges and the things that matter to you over time. Instead of giving everyone the same generic advice, it is designed to become more personalized the more you interact with it. The app can help you think through decisions, relationships, habits, goals and everyday situations while identifying patterns or blind spots you may not immediately notice yourself. And I want to add an important therapist disclaimer here: Purpose is not therapy. It doesn’t replace a therapist, mental health treatment, crisis support or medical care, nor does the company claim that it does. Purpose describes itself as a personal-growth mentoring tool. I think that distinction matters. Not everything we struggle with requires therapy. Sometimes we simply need a space to untangle our thoughts, think through a decision, clarify what matters to us or recognize that we have repeated the same pattern approximately 742 times and perhaps it deserves our attention. That kind of reflection can be useful between therapy sessions, alongside journaling, during a season of personal growth, or simply when your brain has 37 tabs open and you need somewhere to start. And maybe the goal isn’t to become a completely different person. Maybe the goal is to understand yourself well enough that you stop automatically repeating things that no longer fit the life you are trying to build. That is something I talk about often here at The Hope Collective. Self-awareness isn’t about endlessly analyzing yourself. It’s about noticing. Noticing what drains you. Noticing what you keep tolerating. Noticing the story you tell yourself when something goes wrong. Noticing when fear is making a decision instead of you. Noticing what actually matters beneath all the noise. Because once you can see a pattern, you finally have the opportunity to choose something different. So here’s a question to sit with this week: What is one pattern in your life that you keep calling a “circumstance” even though, deep down, you know it has become a pattern? No judgment. Just notice it. That’s usually where the interesting stuff begins. If you’re curious about Purpose, you can learn more about it here and try it for free. The app includes personalized AI mentoring, goal and habit support, reflection around relationships and well-being, and 24/7 chat access. This newsletter is sponsored by Purpose. Purpose is a personal-growth tool and is not a substitute for therapy, medical treatment or crisis services.
